Celebrating 20 Years in Fitness

Twenty years ago, I took a leap into the world of fitness, not knowing just how deeply it would shape my life and the lives of those around me. Before stepping into this industry, I earned a degree in maths and management, worked in the oil industry, and even launched a website dedicated to outdoor activities. But in 2005, I made the move to Cumbria, and that’s where my fitness career truly began.
The Early Days
My first role was at the North Lakes Hotel—a solid foundation that set me on a path to expand my business. Soon after, I found myself working for the leisure centre, adult education, and establishing fitness classes in village halls across the region. Little by little, I built a network, adapting to new opportunities and learning from every experience.
Over these two decades, there were moments when I stepped away to enjoy family moments with my two boys and, at one point, to recover from a burst appendix. But each time, I returned with fresh motivation, driven by the passion for movement and the incredible people who made every session worth it.
A Journey Across Cumbria
From Wigton to Shap, my classes have reached different corners of the region, each bringing new faces and fitness goals. Now, my regular classes are within 10 miles of my home in Penruddock, enabling me to bring community fitness to more people.
Along the way, I’ve seen incredible dedication from participants. One standout memory is of someone who traveled all the way from Hexham by bus just to join a Nordic Walking session in Penrith—a true testament to their commitment to movement. And among the many inspiring individuals I’ve had the privilege to train, one particularly remarkable participant was 99 years old, proving that age is never a barrier to staying active.
Over the years personal training has been extremely diverse—whether it's preparing someone for a 100-mile event, or helping individuals combat mobility decline due to long-term conditions. Each client brings a new challenge, and it’s been an honour to be part of so many unique journeys.
Fitness By the Fells & Online
Over 10 years ago, I launched Fitness By the Fells, a day that brings together local instructors to showcase their classes. In total 30 such days have been enjoyed, and no two days have been the same. Of course, no event would be complete without a well-earned slice of flapjack, making these gatherings even more special.
Then came COVID—a time that forced all of us to adapt. I embraced the shift to online classes, and today, they continue. It’s surreal to think that my furthest attendee enjoys my recordings in the Shetland Islands!
Looking Ahead
Today, my focus is on movement for neurological conditions, senior exercise, and community fitness—helping individuals of all ages and abilities stay active, confident, and engaged. It’s been an amazing 20 years, filled with growth, challenges, and meaningful connections.

To everyone who has ever attended a class, participated in personal training, or supported my journey—thank you. Without you, this career wouldn't have turned into such a fulfilling adventure, and I wouldn’t still be doing what I love two decades later.
Here is a little reminder of all the classes we have enjoyed over the years. Can you spot yourself? Which classes have you attended? Any memorable moments? Which ones have I missed?
