Breaking It Down, Building It Up

This summer I set out to walk parts of the Lakeland Way—a stunning 144-mile circular route around the Lake District. It’s designed to be done in one go over 12 days… but my life doesn’t allow for that kind of stretch. So I broke it down.

I’ve now completed 4 segments, clocking up around 45 miles. It’s coming together, and one day I’ll walk it all.

And that’s the point: you don’t have to do everything in one go.

Whether it’s walking 144 miles, getting up from the floor, running a 5km, dancing the waltz, or pulling up cabbages in the garden—break the challenge into manageable pieces.

Want to get up from the floor?

• Start by lowering yourself halfway using a chair.

• Then try going all the way down and back up.

• Use something smaller than a chair to assist.

• From standing, reach for the floor with your hands.

• Eventually, work towards getting down and up freely.

What once felt impossible becomes achievable when you take it step by step. Progress isn’t always linear, and it doesn’t need to be fast, You just need start and see where your effort takes you.

So whatever your goal is, break it down and start. You’ll be amazed at what you can achieve.

Strength has no age limit.

One incredible lady in her 90s recently learned how to stand up from a chair using only her legs—no arms, no assistance.

Since then, she’s practiced three times every morning, proudly showing anyone who’ll watch.

Meeting people like her is one of the greatest honours of my work. She reminds us all that it’s never too late to learn something new, reclaim independence, and celebrate movement.

She will be deeply missed.

Life's For Living

I was chatting recently with a lady who’s absolutely loving her electric bike. It’s given her the freedom to go further and do more than she ever could on a regular bike. She told me how she cycled down to Coniston, stayed at the YHA, walked up to the old mines the next day, then cycled home again. What a brilliant adventure!

It’s a great reminder: there’s no shame in using a bit of support to help you enjoy life more.

  • Walking poles for stability

  • Resistance bands or supports for exercises

  • E-bikes for longer journeys

  • Anything that helps you move with ease

It’s not about doing things the hardest way — it’s about doing them in a way that works for you. The important thing is that you’re out there, moving, and enjoying yourself.

Life’s for living.

Have a Go!

The Greystoke Get Fit 4 Life group has finally been caught in action. This photo captures a moment from our cardio circuit, featuring hurdles, half jacks, lunges, and the undeniable favourite… hoola hooping!

Loved seeing the grins as participants mastered the hoops, unlocking childhood memories and some hidden talents along the way.

Fitness doesn’t have to be serious to be effective. Sometimes, it’s just about having a go, and finding out what you can do.
